From Frustration to Empowerment: How I Advocated for My Perimenopausal Health Journey

More than two years ago, I found myself in a situation many can relate to: struggling with anxiety that disrupted my sleep and left me feeling drained. Waking up at 3 AM with overwhelming anxiety felt like a daunting, new reality. This constant state persisted for months, leaving me feeling like I had downed 20 cups of coffee daily.

Despite having learned effective ways to manage my mental health over the years, I felt lost and overwhelmed. I had battled depression since my teenage years, and I hoped my doctor could offer guidance and relief. However, my visit ended up being far from reassuring.

The Doctor's Response

During that appointment, my doctor made a dismissive analogy, comparing my body to a car. He suggested that just like a car requires oil, I needed to increase my medication when my mental health declined. He prescribed Ativan, an addictive anxiety medication, and upped my antidepressant dosage. Sadly, this approach did not help; I felt worse instead.

Frustration built as I realized my doctor wasn't addressing the root of my issues. I felt unheard and dismissed, intensifying my anxiety. Determined to take charge of my health, I demanded more comprehensive tests.

The Test Results

Days later, I received a call from a nurse with shocking results from my basic tests: my cholesterol levels were alarmingly high. The nurse relayed my doctor's suggestion to exercise more and eat healthier. This advice infuriated me because I was already teaching nine hours of fitness each week and faithfully following a strict diet free of sugar, saturated fats, and processed foods.

At that moment, disbelief and anger washed over me. How could my doctor overlook my active lifestyle? The nurse's question, "Do you have any questions?" felt like a cruel twist of fate. All I could think about was finding a new doctor, and thus, advocating for myself became my main priority.

Finding a New Doctor

After some searches, I found an excellent doctor in Cochrane. This new physician took the time to listen to and understand my concerns and health history. Unlike before, I felt respected and validated.

Recognizing the complexity of my case, my new doctor referred me to a menopause clinic in Calgary. This moment was a turning point in my health journey. For the first time, I felt treated as a whole person instead of just a series of symptoms.

Your Health Journey Matters

Transitioning from frustration to empowerment has been challenging but rewarding. My experiences have taught me how vital it is to find healthcare professionals who truly listen and care.

If you're in a similar situation, remember: you have the right to advocate for your health. Don't hesitate to seek help, ask questions, and demand the care you deserve. Your health journey is uniquely yours, and you have the power to shape it.

The truth

I am open to sharing with you what treatment and medication I am on, but I do not want to advocate for a specific treatment option because we are all different. If you are interested in my journey, please send me a message, and I would be happy to share with you how I am managing my symptoms. P.S. This will include a weighted vest!
